🍕 What is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole.

The Numerator (top) is the parts we have. The Denominator (bottom) is the total parts.

🪙 What is a Decimal?

A decimal is a special fraction where the denominator is always a power of 10 (10, 100, 1000).

0.1 = 1/10 (One Tenth)

0.01 = 1/100 (One Hundredth)

Example 1: Adding Like Fractions (Visual)

Find the sum: 2/9 + 4/9

2 Blue + 4 Purple = 6/9 Total

Step 1: Keep the denominator (9) the same because the total slices don't change.

Final: Add numerators: 2 + 4 = 6. Result: 6/9.

Example 2: Tenths to Decimals (Visual)

Write 4/5 as a decimal.

8 sections out of 10 shaded = 0.8

Step 1: Multiply top and bottom by 2 to make the denominator 10. (4x2 / 5x2 = 8/10).

Step 2: 8/10 means "8 in the tenths place".

Final: Result is 0.8.

Example 3: Hundredths Visualizer

Convert 27/100 to a decimal.

Step 1: Identify that there are two zeros in 100.

Step 2: Move the decimal point two places to the left.

Final: Result is 0.27.

Example 4: Word Problem

Sarah has $0.50 and her brother gives her 1/4 of a dollar. How much does she have now?
